On a night when the Timbers honored Diego Valeri by adding him as the sixth member of the Timbers Ring of Honor, the Timbers made the night even more special with a 3-2 win over the Columbus Crew. Dairon Asprilla had two goals for the Timbers while Sebastián Blanco would get the game winner, while Lucas Zelarayán had two goals for the visitors.
The first good scoring chance for either team, which came in the 28th minute, would result in a Timbers goal when after the Crew failed to clear an Evander corner kick, Claudio Bravo used a bicycle kick to keep the ball in the box, with Dario Župarić then tapping a pass to Dairon Asprilla, who blasted into the far side of the net past goalkeeper Patrick Schulte, and the Timbers had a 1-0 lead.
It would only take two minutes for the Timbers to double the lead, when Franck Boli played a perfect pass into the run of Asprilla has he had a lone breakaway, and he tapped the ball past Schulte and into the net, and the lead was now 2-0.
But in first half stoppage time, Columbus would pull a goal back when Jacen Russell-Rowe found Lucas Zelarayán perfectly beating an offside trap, and rounding goalkeeper David Bingham and finished easily, and the Timbers lead was now 2-1, which would be the score at the half.
In the 65th minute, Columbus would tie things up when Zelarayán hit a perfectly curling shot from 25 yards out that found the top right hand corner, and the Crew had tied the match at 2-2.
In the 73rd minute, the Timbers nearly re-took the lead when after an Evander free kick, Yimmi Chará had a chance on a header from just a few yards out but the header was off the crossbar.
But in the 80th minute, an attempt by Chará would be deflected across the goal mouth but into the run of a charging Sebastián Blanco, who blasted his shot into the roof of the net for his first goal of the season, and the Timbers had retaken the lead at 3-2.
Neither team would find the net again with the Timbers getting the 3-2 win over the Crew.
