The Timbers got a goal deep in stoppage time to secure a 2-1 win over Los Angeles FC on a bright Saturday afternoon at Providence Park. Kristoffer Velde and Kevin Kelsy scored for the Timbers, while Jude Terry had the lone goal for the visitors.
In the 32nd minute, Kristoffer Velde made a nice run to the top of the LAFC box, and then fired a low shot just inside the left post, and the Timbers had grabbed a 1-0 lead. This was the first goal LAFC had given up in seven games.
That lead would last until just after halftime, when in the 49th minute, LAFC’s Jude Terry hit a beautiful curing shot from just outside the box into the top right corner, the 17 year old’s first ever MLS goal, and the game was drawn at 1-1.
In the 87th minute, it appeared LAFC had taken a late lead, but a VAR review confirmed the pass to the LAFC player who made the goal-scoring cross was in an offside position, and the goal was taken off the board.
But the Timbers still had a surprise in store for LAFC, when in the 96th minute, a cross from Velde found Brandon Bye at the far post, and his header back across the goal mouth was put into the net by a diving header from Kevin Kelsy, giving the Timbers the late 2-1 lead, which would be the final, giving LAFC their first loss of the season.
