{"id":4946,"date":"2019-10-06T21:01:11","date_gmt":"2019-10-07T04:01:11","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.pdxcite.net\/soccercityusa\/?p=4946"},"modified":"2019-10-07T07:23:28","modified_gmt":"2019-10-07T14:23:28","slug":"timbers-advance-to-2019-mls-playoffs-with-3-1-win-over-san-jose","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.pdxcite.net\/soccercityusa\/2019\/10\/06\/timbers-advance-to-2019-mls-playoffs-with-3-1-win-over-san-jose\/","title":{"rendered":"Timbers advance to 2019 MLS Playoffs with 3-1 win over San Jose"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The Portland Timbers completed an up-and-down 2019 regular season on Sunday at Providence Park with a 3-1 win over the San Jose Earthquakes, earning a spot in the 2019 MLS playoffs by finishing sixth in the Western Conference. <strong>Larrys Mabiala<\/strong>, <strong>Dairon Asprilla<\/strong>, and <strong>Sebastian Blanco<\/strong> scored for the Timbers, while <strong>Chris Wondolowski<\/strong> had the lone goal for the Earthquakes.<\/p>\n<p>With the win, the Timbers now face Real Salt Lake on the road in two weeks to start the MLS Playoffs.<\/p>\n<p>The Timbers would have the majority of early possession, and nearly made it pay off in just the seventh minute when <strong>Jorge Moreira<\/strong> had an open look from the top of the box, but slipped the shot just wide right.<\/p>\n<p>In the 14th minute, the home side nearly benefitted from an own goal when a Timbers corner was accidentally shouldered towards net by <strong>Chris Wondolowski<\/strong>, with <strong>Daniel Vega<\/strong> making a brilliant reaction save to keep the match scoreless.<\/p>\n<p>Then in the 29th minute, the Timbers would open the scoring when the Quakes were unable to clear a Timbers free kick, with <strong>Jorge Villafa\u00f1a<\/strong> sending in a low cross that <strong>Larrys Mabiala<\/strong> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.pdxcite.net\/soccercityusa\/wp-content\/gallery\/sj100619\/sj100619-21.jpg\">was able to direct past Vega<\/a>, and the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.pdxcite.net\/soccercityusa\/wp-content\/gallery\/sj100619\/sj100619-22.jpg\">Timbers had a 1-0 lead<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The lead would not last long, as in the 39th minute, as <strong>Cristian Espinoza<\/strong> sent in a cross that Wondolowski did well to get his head on at the near post, directing it past <strong>Steve Clark<\/strong> and into the net to tie the score at 1-1, which would be the score at the break.<\/p>\n<p>The Timbers would re-take the lead in the 59th minute when <strong>Jeremy Ebobisse<\/strong> played a ball into <strong>Dairon Asprilla<\/strong> just outside the San Jose box, with the Timbers midfielder beating his defender to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.pdxcite.net\/soccercityusa\/wp-content\/gallery\/sj100619\/sj100619-31.jpg\">have a low shot that was saved by Vega<\/a>, but Asprilla put in his own rebound to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.pdxcite.net\/soccercityusa\/wp-content\/gallery\/sj100619\/sj100619-32.jpg\">give the Timbers a 2-1 lead<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>In the 76th minu<a href=\"http:\/\/www.pdxcite.net\/soccercityusa\/wp-content\/gallery\/sj100619\/sj100619-38.jpg\">te the Timbers would double their lead when<\/a> <strong>Sebastian Blanco<\/strong> played a perfect free kick from 22 yards out that <a href=\"http:\/\/www.pdxcite.net\/soccercityusa\/wp-content\/gallery\/sj100619\/sj100619-39.jpg\">blasted into the upper right corner of the goal<\/a> to give the Timbers a 3-1 lead.<\/p>\n<p>The visitors had a great chance to pull a goal back one minute later when Clark made two great saves on close-in shots from Espioza.<\/p>\n<p>But the Timbers would hold on for the win and now move on to play Real Salt Lake to start the 2019 playoffs.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Steve Clark<\/strong> had three saves for the Timbers while <strong>Daniel Vega<\/strong> recorded five for the Earthquakes.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.timbers.com\/post\/2019\/10\/06\/match-recap-portland-timbers-3-san-jose-earthquakes-1\">Timbers match report<\/a> | <a href=\"https:\/\/www.timbers.com\/post\/2019\/10\/06\/match-highlights-portland-timbers-3-san-jose-earthquakes-1-oct-6-2019?autoplay=true\">Video highlights<\/a><\/p>\nngg_shortcode_0_placeholder\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Portland Timbers completed an up-and-down 2019 regular season on Sunday at Providence Park with a 3-1 win over the San Jose Earthquakes, earning a spot in the 2019 MLS playoffs by finishing sixth in the Western Conference.
