{"id":9099,"date":"2024-03-30T21:58:08","date_gmt":"2024-03-31T04:58:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.pdxcite.net\/soccercityusa\/?p=9099"},"modified":"2024-03-30T21:58:08","modified_gmt":"2024-03-31T04:58:08","slug":"timbers-fight-back-to-tie-score-late-but-fall-3-2-to-whitecaps-on-a-late-goal","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.pdxcite.net\/soccercityusa\/2024\/03\/30\/timbers-fight-back-to-tie-score-late-but-fall-3-2-to-whitecaps-on-a-late-goal\/","title":{"rendered":"Timbers fight back to tie score late, but fall 3-2 to Whitecaps on a late goal"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The Portland Timbers went down early to the Vancouver Whitecaps, fought back from a two-goal deficit to tie it, but lost on a sloppy late goal by the Whitecaps for a 3-2 final. <strong>Evander<\/strong> and <strong>Felipe Mora<\/strong> would score for the Timbers, while<strong> Ryan Gauld<\/strong>, <strong>Faf\u00e0 Picault<\/strong>, and <strong>Ryan Raposo<\/strong> would score for the hosts.<\/p>\n<p>It only took two minutes and the Timbers were down a goal, when <strong>Ryan Gauld<\/strong>&#8216;s initial shot was blocked by <strong>Zac McGraw<\/strong>, but the rebound fell right back to his feet and he knocked the rebound home, and the Whitecaps led 1-0.<\/p>\n<p>In the 10th minute the Whitecaps had several good chances, including a rebound off the crossbar that <strong>Juan David Mosquera<\/strong> cleared just before it crossed the line.<\/p>\n<p>In the 29th minute, Vancouver doubled their lead on a counterattack when McGraw failed to clear, and the ball fell right to <strong>Faf\u00e0 Picault<\/strong>, who finished by curing a shot into the top right corner past Timbers goalkeeper <strong>Maxime Cr\u00e9peau<\/strong>, and the score was now 2-0.<\/p>\n<p>The Timbers had a few free kick chances from about 25 yards out by <strong>Evander<\/strong> but never seriously threatened to score, and the Whitecaps led 2-0 at the break.<\/p>\n<p>The Timbers came out looking more aggressive in the second half, and it only took until the 52nd minute for that to pay off, as <strong>Cristhian Paredes<\/strong> played a nice pass to the top of the box to Evander, who blasted a shot into the upper left corner past Whitecaps goalkeeper <strong>Yohei Takaoka<\/strong>, and the Whitecaps lead was now 2-1.<\/p>\n<p>In the 66th minute <strong>Levonte Johnson<\/strong> had a great chance on a very tight angle shot for the Whitecaps, which<strong> Dario \u017dupari\u0107<\/strong> cleared off the line.<\/p>\n<p>In the 78th minute, the Timbers would tie it up when Evander sent in a beautiful curling cross that <strong>Felipe Mora<\/strong> met with a fine header, putting it past Takaoka, and the score was now 2-2.<\/p>\n<p>But in the 87th minute, a fumbled ball by the Timbers goalkeeper would hurt them as a scramble in front of the Timbers goal ended with <strong>Ryan Raposo<\/strong> knocking the ball over the goal line from a yard out, and the Whitecaps had regained the lead at 3-2.<\/p>\n<p>In stoppage time, the Timbers were calling for a last-minute penalty when it appeared<strong> Jonathan Rodr\u00edguez<\/strong> was pulled back by the shoulder attempting a late shot, but a quick review decided it was not enough for a penalty.
