{"id":9619,"date":"2024-09-18T21:11:22","date_gmt":"2024-09-19T04:11:22","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.pdxcite.net\/soccercityusa\/?p=9619"},"modified":"2024-09-19T07:34:05","modified_gmt":"2024-09-19T14:34:05","slug":"thorns-cant-hold-late-2-0-lead-drop-concacaf-w-champions-cup-match-to-san-diego-by-3-2-score","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.pdxcite.net\/soccercityusa\/2024\/09\/18\/thorns-cant-hold-late-2-0-lead-drop-concacaf-w-champions-cup-match-to-san-diego-by-3-2-score\/","title":{"rendered":"Thorns can&#8217;t hold late 2-0 lead, drop CONCACAF W Champions Cup match to San Diego by 3-2 score"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The Portland Thorns had a two goal second half lead they couldn&#8217;t protect in San Diego and fell to the Wave by a 3-2 score.&nbsp; <strong>Sophia Smith<\/strong> and <strong>Reilyn Turner<\/strong> scored for the Thorns, while <strong>Mar\u00eda S\u00e1nchez<\/strong> had a hat trick for the Wave (two were on penalty kicks.)<\/p>\n<p><strong>Sophia Smith<\/strong> gave the Thorns the early lead in the 26th minute with a low shot just inside the left post.&nbsp; The Thorns led 1-0 at the break.<\/p>\n<p>In the 54th minute the Thorns would double the lead when <strong>Sophie Hirst<\/strong> made a nice pass to an open <strong>Reilyn Turner<\/strong> was open in the box, and her shot eluded the goalkeeper, and the Thorns were up 2-0.<\/p>\n<p>But in the 65th minute the Wave were awarded a penalty kick on a foul at the edge of the box by <strong>Sam Coffey<\/strong>. <strong>Mar\u00eda S\u00e1nchez<\/strong> would convert the kick just inside the right post, and the score was now 2-1 Thorns.<\/p>\n<p>Just a few minutes later, the Wave would get the equalizer when a nice cross was headed in by S\u00e1nchez, and the score was now 2-2.<\/p>\n<p>In the 83rd minute, San Diego would get their second penalty kick when <strong>Becky Saurebrunn<\/strong> was called for a handball in the box.
