Timbers fall flat with 2-1 loss at Real Salt Lake

After a five-game winning streak and a six-game unbeaten streak, the Timbers did not carry the momentum into their Wednesday night match at Real Salt Lake. They would give up two early goals and though they did recover to pull back within a goal late in the match, they never would find the equalizer and would fall by a 2-1 score.

Almost all of the first half shots on net would be RSL’s, and it would only take until the 11th minute before the home side made it pay off. Timbers goalkeeper Aljaz Ivacic would come off his line to control a loose ball in the box, but was only able to knock it forward a few yards where it was controlled by Real Salt Lake forward Douglas Martinez, who knocked it into the open net for a 1-0 lead.

Just 15 minutes later, RSL doubled their lead off a corner kick that fell to an open midfielder Damir Kreilach, who finished with a low hard shot to put RSL up by a 2-0 score.

The Timbers would look much sharper in the 2nd half, and finally would find an equalizer in the 77th minute when defender Bill Tuiloma headed in a Diego Valeri free kick to pull the Timbers within a goal at 2-1.

Despite some good late chances, the Timbers never found the equalizer and would fall by a 2-1 score.
