Timbers open 2021 season on Tuesday in Honduras

The Portland Timbers open their 2021 season in the Scotiabank CONCACAF Champions League in San Pedro Sula, Honduras, against CD Marathón.  The Timbers earned the spot after winning the MLS Is Back Tournament in 2020, and is their first time back in this tournament since the 2016-2017 season when they earned a spot as 2015 MLS Cup Champions.  They year they played in the group stage but did not advance.  The match will start at 3:00pm.

The return leg of the home-and-home series will be next Tuesday, April 13, in Portland at Providence Park at 5:00pm and will be the first Timbers home match of 2021, and will be the first time fans have been allowed at home games since last March.

The winner of this two-game series takes on the winner of the series between Mexico’s Club América and C.D. Olimpia from Honduras.  The Timbers played C.D. Olimpia twice during the Champions League group stage in 2014-2015 and split a pair of matches, but lost the tiebreaker to C.D. Olimpia on away goals and did not advance.
