Timbers fall short at FC Cincinnati by 2-1 score

The Portland Timbers were on the road Saturday at Cincinnati and could not quite catch up to a two goal lead, and fell short by a 2-1 score.  Dairon Asprilla had the Timbers goal, while Sergio Santos and Brandon Vazquez scored for the hosts.

Sergio Santos would have a breakaway in 23rd minute, but Timbers goalkeeper Aljaž Ivačič did very well to make the save to keep the game scoreless. But in the 31st minute, Cincinnati would take the lead when Álvaro Barreal curled in a nice cross from the left side that Santos met with a diving header, and the hosts had the 1-0 lead.

Both teams came close to scoring just before the half, but both shots were just wide or high, and FC Cincinnati had a 1-0 lead at the break.

In the 58th minute, the home side would double their lead when the Timbers failed to clear a few rebounds in the box, and Brandon Vazquez was able to finish easily to make the lead 2-0.

But just two minutes later, the same thing would happen at the other end when Santiago Moreno‘s shot produced a rebound Cincinnati couldn’t clear, and Dairon Asprilla knocked it home, and the lead was now 2-1.

Five minutes later, Moreno had a great chance to level the score for the Timbers when he was able to slip into the box by himself, but his weak shot was easily saved.  The Timbers never found the equalizer and fell by a 2-1 score.
