Timbers lose GK to red card, but hold on for 2-2 draw vs. LAFC

The Timbers would let two leads slip away against Los Angeles FC, but held on after playing almost an entire half down a player, and held on for a 2-2 draw.  Felipe Mora and Evander scored for the Timbers, while Mateusz Bogusz scored twice for the visitors.

In just the third minute, the Timbers had a great chance when Jonathan Rodríguez found Antony open at the far post, but the one-timer shot attempt would go wide right.  But in the 11th minute, the Timbers would be on the board when Evander chipped a brilliant pass  into the run of Felipe Mora, who barely redirected the ball past LAFC goalkeeper Hugo Lloris, and the Timbers had a 1-0 lead.

But in the 22nd minute, a Timbers defensive breakdown allowed Mateusz Bogusz to slip into the box largely unmarked, and he put a nice low shot past goalkeeper Maxime Crépeau and just inside the right post, and the score was level at 1-1.

In the 34th minute, the Timbers would re-take the lead, when Juan David Mosquera chipped a pass to Evander, who controlled it nicely in the box, and blasted a shot just under the bar past Lloris, and the Timber led again, by a 2-1 score.  This would be the score at halftime.

But just two minute into the second half, the tone of the match would change, when on an LAFC breakaway, Crépeau was judged to have fouled Denis Bouanga just outside the box, and the referee showed a red card to the Timbers keeper.  So the Timbers would have to play the rest of the match down a man and with James Pantemis in goal.  LAFC had a free kick just outside the box that Bogusz put nicely inside the left post with Pantemis never moving, and LAFC had leveled the score at 2-2.

LAFC would quickly have a chance to grab the lead in the 54th minute when Bouanga slipped a blast just wide left.  In the 66th minute the Timbers came within inches of taking the lead when a free kick by Evander was off the crossbar.  Two minutes later, an Evander corner kick was deflected towards goal by Rodríguez, and barely kept out by a nice save by Lloris.

Three minutes into seven minutes of added time, the visitors had their best chance to steal the win, when Bogusz slipped into the box and hit a tight-angle shot that Pantemis saved nicely, but the rebound fell in front of the goal, with Kei Kamara seeming to have an easy chance to finish into a mostly-empty net, but his attempt would slip just wide right.
