Adi gets brace, Gleeson has shutout in 2-0 Timbers win over FC Dallas
Fanendo Adi has made a name for having two-goal performances, and he would get his first since the season opener in a 2-0 win for the Portland Timbers over FC Dallas at Providence Park. Both teams would be missing multiple players taking part in World Cup Qualifying matches.
The Timbers would have the first good scoring chance in the fifth minute when Fanendo Adi‘s dipping shot from outside the box forced Dallas goalkeeper Jesse Gonzalez to tip the shot over the crossbar.
FC Dallas would come within a few inches of taking the lead in the 22nd minute when Michael Barrios‘s low cross led to a point-blank shot by Roland Lamah which was saved by Timbers goalkeeper Jake Gleeson, but the rebound trickled towards the Timbers goal line and was only kept out by defender Zarek Valentin who cleared it just as it was about the cross the goal line.
Ten minutes later the Timbers would take the lead when Sebastian Blanco found Adi inside the Dallas box, with the Timbers forward fighting off a Dallas defender to poke the ball past Gonzalez and into the net to give the Timbers a 1-0 lead.
In the 41st minute, Timbers midfielder Dairon Asprilla also tested the Dallas keeper from outside the box, with Gonzalez once again doing well to tip the ball over the bar, and the Timbers held a 1-0 lead at the half.
In the 72nd minute the Timbers would double their lead as a Diego Valeri pass into the run of Asprilla had the Timbers midfielder on a run deep into the Dallas box, and his low cross dummied by Diego Chara and fell right to an unmarked Adi, who faked Gonzalez to commit and calmly finished for the 2-0 lead.
Valeri just missed a chance to widen the lead to three goals as Asprilla dropped a pass to him at the top of the box, and his curling shot just slipped past the left post.
Dallas would get a good chance on a free kick from just outside the Timbers box late in the match, and though Victor Ulloa‘s shot got through the Timbers wall, it was right into the hands of Gleeson for the easy save.
But the brace from Adi was all the Timbers needed to secure their second straight 2-0 win. Jake Gleeson recorded three saves in the shotout win while Jesse Gonzalez had two saves for Dallas.
