Last-gasp goal by Moreno earns Timbers 1-1 draw in Columbus

The Portland Timbers had their four-game winning streak snapped, but a very last-second goal by Santiago Moreno earned the Timbers a 1-1 draw on the road against the Columbus Crew.  Kevin Molino would score the lone goal for the hosts.

The Crew nearly jumped out to an early lead in the second mind when Cucho Hernández slipped in behind the Timbers defense and had a one-on-one with Timbers goalkeeper Aljaž Ivačič, but chipped his shot over the crossbar.  Both teams had moderately good chances as the half progressed, though the Crew were getting the better scoring opportunities, and it finally paid off in the 36th minute when Lucas Zelarayán tapped a nice pass into the run of Kevin Molino in the Timbers box, and the forward finished well with a low shot past Ivačič to put the Crew up 1-0.  That score would be the score at the break.

The Timbers looked better organized in the second half, and Yimmi Chará and Bill Tuiloma would have excellent chances in the 58th and 59th minutes, but their shots were right at Columbus goalkeeper Eloy Room and easily saved.

Both teams would have good chances for the remainder of the half but would have difficulty in putting their shots on target, and it appears the Timbers were going to be shut out for the first time in 18 matches (since the Philadelphia Union did so back in May), but just as stoppage time was ending, a wild scramble for the loose ball ended up on the foot of Santiago Moreno, and he blasted a curling shot from 20 yards out that slipped just inside the right post to draw the Timbers level at 1-1.  The match ended shortly after the restart for the 1-1 draw.

Aljaž Ivačič would record three saves for the Timbers while Eloy Room was credited with two for the hosts.
