Timbers rally late for 2-1 win at New York City FC

The Portland Timbers would travel to the big apple to take on New York City FC, and after going down early, they would sneak in two late goals for a 2-1 win to remain undefeated in the 2024 season.  Santiago Rodríguez would have the early goal for the hosts, while Antony and Evander had the late goals for the Timbers.

After controlling the early play, New York City FC would break through in the 10th minute when a rebound fell to Santiago Rodríguez, who one-timed a low shot off the left post, past Timbers goalkeeper Maxime Crépeau, and the home side had an early 1-0 lead.  Monsef Bakrar nearly doubled the lead a few minutes later when he fought in past the Timbers defense, but Crépeau would charge off his line to cut down the angle, and the shot would trickle wide right.

The Timbers started to control play more as the half progressed, but neither team seriously threatened to score, and the score would be a 1-0 lead for NYCFC at the break.

Play was more even in the second half, and the hosts had a goal disallowed in the 66th minute because of an offside call.

But in the 85th minute the Timbers would finally break through, on their first good scoring chance of the day.  Juan David Mosquera made a nice run to the endline and made a low cross that Antony would blast perfectly into the upper right corner past goalkeeper Matt Freese, and the score was level at 1-1.

The match looked like it was headed for a draw, but then just after the announced six minutes of stoppage time had ended, Antony fed the ball to Evander, who was well outside the box, and Evander made what looked like a last futile scoring attempt but it was a beautiful dipping shot that slipped into the top right corner, and the Timbers led 2-1  The match would end not long afterwards, and somehow the Timbers had stolen a 2-1 win in New York.

Maxime Crépeau would record five saves for the Timbers, while Matt Freese had a single save for New York City FC.
