Timbers rally from three goal deficit for miracle 3-3 draw in Kansas City

The Portland Timbers would stage a miracle comeback from a 3-0 deficit, earning three second half goals and a 3-3 draw on the road with Sporting Kansas City.  Evander, Felipe Mora, and Eric Miller would score for the Timbers, while Willy Agada scored twice for he hosts, with Daniel Rosero also scoring.

But it was two unfortunate deflections that would cost the Timbers in the 14th minute, with a pass being deflected by Cristhian Paredes, then a shot from the top of the box by Willy Agada deflected by Miguel Araujo, but the deflected shot was into the top left corner of the net past Maxime Crépeau, and Sporting had a 1-0 lead.

In the 38th minute, Sporting would double the lead, this time off a corner by Memo Rodríguez when Daniel Rosero was left unmarked as he charged into the penalty area, and he would get to the ball just before Crépeau, and the hosts lead was now 2-0.

Sporting would add another goal in first half stoppage time, a long ball to Robert Voloder appeared to have Rosero also involved in the play in an offside position, and Voloder headed to Agada, who scored easily to make the score 3-0 at the break.

In the 61st minute, Sporting were awarded a penalty on a foul by Claudio Bravo at the corner of the box, but Agada shot well wide left on the penalty attempt.

Just a minute or so later, Felipe Mora was fouled in the box by Tim Leibold, with another penalty being awarded, this time to the Timbers.  Evander took the kick, and scored easily with Tim Melia going the wrong way, and the Timbers had pulled a goal back and now trailed 3-1.

And just a few minutes later, the Timbers pulled another goal back when Jonathan Rodríguez‘s low cross found Mora, who one-timed the shot just over the line as Melia couldn’t keep the ball out, and suddenly the score was 3-2 Sporting.

In the 77th minute the Timbers came within inches of tying the score when Rodríguez had a header attempt the was just inches past the post.

Then in the 81st minute, the Timbers did tie it up, when a powerful header attempt from Paredes was saved by Melia, but the rebound fell to defender Eric Miller, who put his shot into the net for his first goal in his 11-year MLS career, and the score was level at 3-3.  Both teams would have good chances late, but neither team would find the net again and the score after 10 minutes of stoppage time would end up in a 3-3 draw.
