Timbers fight back to tie score late, but fall 3-2 to Whitecaps on a late goal

The Portland Timbers went down early to the Vancouver Whitecaps, fought back from a two-goal deficit to tie it, but lost on a sloppy late goal by the Whitecaps for a 3-2 final. Evander and Felipe Mora would score for the Timbers, while Ryan Gauld, Fafà Picault, and Ryan Raposo would score for the hosts.

It only took two minutes and the Timbers were down a goal, when Ryan Gauld‘s initial shot was blocked by Zac McGraw, but the rebound fell right back to his feet and he knocked the rebound home, and the Whitecaps led 1-0.

In the 10th minute the Whitecaps had several good chances, including a rebound off the crossbar that Juan David Mosquera cleared just before it crossed the line.

In the 29th minute, Vancouver doubled their lead on a counterattack when McGraw failed to clear, and the ball fell right to Fafà Picault, who finished by curing a shot into the top right corner past Timbers goalkeeper Maxime Crépeau, and the score was now 2-0.

The Timbers had a few free kick chances from about 25 yards out by Evander but never seriously threatened to score, and the Whitecaps led 2-0 at the break.

The Timbers came out looking more aggressive in the second half, and it only took until the 52nd minute for that to pay off, as Cristhian Paredes played a nice pass to the top of the box to Evander, who blasted a shot into the upper left corner past Whitecaps goalkeeper Yohei Takaoka, and the Whitecaps lead was now 2-1.

In the 66th minute Levonte Johnson had a great chance on a very tight angle shot for the Whitecaps, which Dario Župarić cleared off the line.

In the 78th minute, the Timbers would tie it up when Evander sent in a beautiful curling cross that Felipe Mora met with a fine header, putting it past Takaoka, and the score was now 2-2.

But in the 87th minute, a fumbled ball by the Timbers goalkeeper would hurt them as a scramble in front of the Timbers goal ended with Ryan Raposo knocking the ball over the goal line from a yard out, and the Whitecaps had regained the lead at 3-2.

In stoppage time, the Timbers were calling for a last-minute penalty when it appeared Jonathan Rodríguez was pulled back by the shoulder attempting a late shot, but a quick review decided it was not enough for a penalty. Seconds later the final whistle blew and the Whitecaps had a 3-2 win.

Maxime Crépeau had two saves for the Timbers, while Yohei Takaoka also had two for the hosts.
